Glens Falls- On Monday, November 5, 2007, 24 year old Stephen M. Jones was arrested for allegedly breaking and entering.  The scene of the crime was at 38 Chester Street, the home of 58 year old Mildred R. Clay. The robbery occurred around 12:15 in the afternoon.

When Mrs. Clay came home from a bridge club at 2:00 pm, she had realized that someone had broken one of her windows to gain entry.  The missing items were $110 from her purse.

When the police arrived at the scene, there were finger prints on the window. They were a match to Mr. Jones from past crimes.

They found Mr. Jones in Philadelphia the next morning. When the police took him in for questioning, he confessed to the crime and claimed he was intoxicated at the time of the incident. He also said he had stolen the money so he could go to Philadelphia to visit family there.

He was charged with a felony and is in prison awaiting his trial.

Cobble Mountain Blaze

Lake Luzerne - Cobble Mountain became a blazing inferno around 2:00pm. It was caused earlier in the day when lightning struck the mountain and it caught on fire. It spread quickly due to lack of rain. Approximately 40 firefighters fought the inferno from Hadley- Luzerne, Lake George, West Glens Falls, and Corinth. They fought the fire with rakes, shovels, Indian water tanks, chainsaws, and lastly it was back burned. “They fought the blaze for about 6 hours,” said fire fighter Douglas Olson.

The inferno burned 10 acres of steep and heavily wooded terrain. The flames were 12-15 feet high. No structures were damaged or injuries were reported. It filled the town with smoke making a haze. It smoldered continuously for about a week.
