The Adirondack Writer’s Guild is a program funded by a private grant made available through the Diamond Foundation. The goal of this program is to immerse students in a world of literature and writing.
The 12 participating students, selected from grades four, five and six, work very hard to learn about the craft of writing. Authors such as Bruce Hiscock, poets such as Mary Sanders Shartle, and musicians such as Brian Chevalier all contribute to the program in order to give our students a once in a lifetime experience. Mr. Al Graham assists our students in the creation of their own Writer’s Guild website.
The Writer’s Guild is held on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school from November through March. The program has a different theme each month, covering topics such as creative writing, poetry, writing lyrics, creating illustrations, etc. Each month the students host a “Coffeehouse” for their parents and the general public. At these gatherings their work is shared in a warm and supportive atmosphere.
Each student will receive a compilation of their works from throughout the program bound and published in a professional manner. They each have a CD they produced with the groups music. They also are treated to a three day, all expense paid literary trip to a student selected destination such as New York City or Philadelphia.
The program is hosted by Hadley Luzerne Central School teachers Susan Ostrander, Richard Trowbridge, Andrea Palmer and David Diamond.
