HLCS DISTRICT RESIDENTSOn Tuesday, October 21, the Hadley-Luzerne School District is asking voters to reconsider the Grade Reconfiguration Proposition. A positive vote on the proposition will result in the school districts grades being realigned PK-6 and 7-12.

A Public Hearing will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 7 at the Stuart M. Townsend Middle School. The purpose of the grade reconfiguration proposition is to correct the alignment of grades in the district and improve the academic achievement of our students. Currently, Pre-Kindergarten through grade 2 students (ages 4-7) attend school in our main building next to high school students (age 14-19). The proposed grade reconfiguration will enable PK-6 students to attend school at the current middle school and enable students in grades 7-12 to attend school in the main building. The grade reconfiguration proposition asks the voters to approve the transfer of $560,000 from our allocated fund balance to support the project. In 2012, voters approved the establishment of a capital reserve and funded the reserve with $160,000. The estimated cost to complete the renovations is $720,000. This amount includes funds to add suitable playground equipment for elementary children at the proposed PK-6 elementary school. The district proposes no borrowing or increase in taxes to fund the project. At the May 20 budget vote, the proposal was narrowly defeated with 304 residents in favor and 311 opposed illustrating how every vote counts. A detailed description of the proposal can be found on the Hadley-Luzerne website at www.hlcs.org and in a newsletter that will be mailed to all district residents. We have also provided additional information to help you in making an informed decision on this proposal. We encourage all residents to vote. Please make sure you are eligible to vote and if you are not available on voting day, consider voting via an absentee ballot. Applications for absentee ballots for voting on this proposition may be obtained at the Office of the District Clerk between the hours of 8 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, except holidays and on the district’s website at www.hlcs.org. Completed applications for absentee ballots must be received by the District Clerk at least seven (7) days prior to the vote if the ballot is to be mailed to the voter, or the day before the election, if the ballot is to be delivered personally to the voter. Absentee ballots must be received by the District Clerk not later than 5 p.m. on October 21, 2014. For further clarification of voter registration or absentee ballots, please call the District Clerk at 696-2378 x108. We are very grateful for your continued support and hope the information in this newsletter will prove helpful as you consider whether to approve this proposal.

HL-BOOSTER CLUB

Who are the Boosters?

The HL Booster Club is a not-for-profit organization of parent volunteers. Boosters raise funds at the concession stand, hold raffles, sell Eagles athletic apparel and collect admissions; with all proceeds going to support our athletic program.

Last year, our booster club allocated well over $5,000 to Hadley-Luzerne teams. In addition, Boosters helped pay for our new digital marquee purchased gym speakers and sports equipment requested by coaches. Other events include the annual alumni games, sponsoring the sports banquet and athletic awards.

Please show your support for Hadley-Luzerne athletics by becoming an active member of the HL Booster Club. SAVE THE DATE! Our next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, October 28th at 6:30 pm in the high school media center. For more information please contact us at hlbc.org.

LITERACY EVENTS AT HLES

The Hadley-Luzerne Elementary School sponsors two special reading events.  The first Family Reading Night for this school year is scheduled for Monday, October 6th. Our PK-2 parents and families are invited to share books with their children and listen to books read by some of their favorite teachers and special guests. Thanks to our HL-PTSA, each child will receive a new book to take home at the Family Reading Night on October 6th in the H-L ES Media Center.

On October 17th, parents and guests are invited to an assembly with Senator Betty Little, who will return to our elementary school to hand out certificates for students who completed the New York Senate Summer Reading Program “Fizz Boom Read!”  Visit LITTLE.NYSENATE.GOV for more information. What a great accomplishment for our students and their parents.  We will be participating in this reading program again in June.  Let’s all work hard to increase the total number of students receiving this award next fall!
