NYSED ASSESSMENT DATA

This week the New York State Education Department released the results of reading and math assessments taken by our students in grades 3-8. These tests measured new, more rigorous, Common Core State Standards. As was expected, student scores declined compared to last year; however, a new baseline for student performance has been established. More information about the results are available on our website (www.hlcs.org) and individual student score reports will be mailed home in the fall.

 

OPEN HOUSE

In preparation for the 2013-2014 school year, we invite our soon-to-be 3rd grade parents and students to our Open House.  We tour the Stuart M. Townsend Middle School building with you, enjoy refreshments, and answer any questions you may have.  This year’s Open House will be Tuesday, August 27th at 6:00 p.m. in the middle school media center.  For further information, please call 696-2378 x101.

 

FRESHMEN ORIENTATION NIGHT

We are all very excited about the upcoming school year at Hadley-Luzerne.  The transition into ninth grade will be a great opportunity for each student.  In order to ease the anxiety of the new surroundings for incoming freshmen; High School Principal, Mr. Beecher Baker and staff have coordinated a “NEW BEGINNINGS DAY” on Thursday, August 29th, at 6:00 p.m.  All entering ninth grade students and their parents are invited to attend this very important orientation.  It is important that everyone will get to know each other and develop a feeling that school will be a place where we have high expectations for academic success and people who care!  A tour of the building will be optional and free and reduced lunch applications will be available.  We have received many favorable responses regarding this important evening.  Through teamwork among parents, teachers, and administrators, we can provide teaching for learning in a humanistic environment with high expectations of success for all students.  See you on Thursday August 29th, at 6:00 p.m. in the high school cafeteria!

 

FREE AND REDUCED LUNCH PROGRAM

The Hadley-Luzerne Central School District will continue to participate in the free and reduced price meal program for all students in grades K-12.  All households should have received an informational letter and application for free and/or reduced meals.  Please return the application to one of the main building offices or mail to HLCS Lunch Program, Business Office, P.O. Box 200, Lake Luzerne, NY, 12846.  Households with incomes the same or below the amount listed on the chart in the information pack for their family size, may be eligible for and are urged to apply for free and/or reduced price meals.  Additional copies are available at the main office in each school.  Applications may be submitted any time during the school year.

 

STUDENT REGISTRATION INFORMATION

The Hadley-Luzerne Central School District has ongoing registration for new students throughout the school year and summer. For new families to the area who need to register children for school, please make an appointment in advance of the first day of school:

Students in grades 9-12; 696-2112 Ext. 114

Students in grades PK-2; 696-2112 Ext. 101

Students in grades 3-8; 696-2378 Ext. 101 or 105

The following documents are REQUIRED for registration:

Student’s birth certificate, immunization records, proof of residence, if applicable, custody/guardianship paperwork, signed release for records from the previous school and HL registration form.

HL BUSINESS OFFICE RELOCATED TO SMTMS

The Hadley-Luzerne Central School District’s Business Office has moved to the middle school, 27 Hyland Drive and will be open at that location during regular business hours. Business Official-Timothy Hilker, District Treasurer-Cynthia Woodcock, and Tax Collector/Account Clerk-Darcey Hastings will move in to offices across from the middle school nurses office. Visitors to the business office should park in the Stuart M. Townsend middle school parking lot, enter through the single brown middle entrance and report only to Darcey Hastings. There will be signage directing visitors to the Business Office.  All other visitors or anyone needing access to the middle school should enter the main doors and sign in at the main office.  To make an appointment with the business office, call 696-2378 Ext. 137.

 

SCHOOL TAX COLLECTOR’S NOTICE

Having received the Tax Roll for the collection   of the 2013-2014 taxes of the Hadley-Luzerne Central School District, said taxes will be received as follows: September 3 through November 4, 2013, during the hours of 9:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the lobby of the Glens Falls National Bank, Main Street, Lake Luzerne, NY. NO COLLECTION WILL BE MADE ON BANK HOLIDAYS.  Taxes may be paid for 30 days from September 3, 2013 to October 2, 2013 without interest or penalties.  On all such taxes remaining unpaid after October 3, 2013 a two percent (2%) penalty will be added to all taxes paid through November 4, 2013, at which time the books will be closed and the uncollected tax list will be forwarded to the County Treasurer.  PLEASE TAKE FURTHER NOTICE THAT FAILURE TO RECEIVE A TAX NOTICE DOES NOT RELIEVE A TAXPAYER OF LIABILITY TO PAY SAID TAX.  TAX BILLS WILL BE MAILED BY SEPTEMBER 1, 2013.  IF YOU DO NOT RECEIVE YOUR BILL WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME PERIOD, PLEASE CALL THE SCHOOL TAX COLLECTOR, DARCEY HASTINGS AT 696-2378 EXT. 137.

EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES

The Hadley-Luzerne School District has the following openings:

A part time aide is needed to work as a child associate. Please submit a letter of interest, resume, HLCS employment application (available online at HLCS.org) to: Paul Berry, Superintendent of Schools, HLCS, PO Box 200, 27 Hyland Drive, Lake Luzerne, NY 12846 or email to yorkr@hlcs.org.

 

Part time bus monitor and substitute bus monitors are needed for the 2013-2014 school year.  An application can be accessed online at HLCS.org or picked up at the Stuart M. Townsend Middle School, District Office.  Completed applications may be mailed to HLCS, PO Box 200, Lake Luzerne, NY  12846 or dropped off at the Main Office, SMTMS, 27 Hyland Drive, Lake Luzerne.

 

The transportation department is in need of substitute bus drivers. If you have the following qualifications, please complete a NYS bus driver application and submit three references. An application DS-870 can be obtained at the Office of the Superintendent, Stuart M. Townsend Middle School, 27 Hyland Drive, Lake Luzerne or on the NYS Department of Motor Vehicle or HLCS.org website: www.dmv.ny.gov/forms/ds870.pdf Applicants should hold a CDL license with passenger and air brake endorsement; must have completed current School Bus Driver 20-hour course; must possess ability to meet all 19-A requirements and must also have an “S” endorsement. Training is available to the right candidate.

 

The Hadley-Luzerne Central School District is in need of on-call aides and teaching assistants to work as substitutes in the Hadley-Luzerne Central School District.  Our district utilizes the WSWHE BOCES Sub-Service to fill these positions, as needed.  If you are interested in substituting in either of these areas please complete the on-line application at www.olasjobs.org/capital, send a letter of interest, resume, placement credentials (or three written references), copy of any certifications (NYS certification required for Teaching Assistant) and transcripts to Donna J.
