The education of our children is an investment not only in their future, but ours. Our students are preparing to enter a complex, competitive and globally connected world. In order for our community, county, state, and country to maintain or improve its economic status, our graduates must be highly skilled, adaptable, and globally aware. To prepare this type of graduate, our school district must look for ways to offer our students educational experiences that develop these skills and qualities.
The need and challenge to educate our children is clear; however, we operate at a time of diminishing financial resources to support public education. In response, our school district has provided leadership to develop learning partnerships and management efficiencies to maximize the use of our resources. During the 2012/2013 school year, a learning partnership has been developed with Corinth CSD and Ballston Spa CSD that will allow our students to take courses not currently offered locally. In addition, sharing positions such as cafeteria manager, school business administrator, school network coordinator, coaches and a classroom teacher highlight management efficiencies and sharing relationships that have allowed the district to focus resources on student programming.
The Hadley-Luzerne Board of Education has constructed a budget for the 2013-2014 school year that invests in student programs that promote their success, while also being sensitive to fiscal pressures being placed upon local taxpayers. The board of education has authorized a tax levy increase of 1.37% that continues support for pre-Kindergarten education, increases support for early literacy programming, assessment and intervention, instructional technology, honors and AP courses. The budget plan also creates a capital fund and a repair reserve that will allow the district to move forward with a grade reconfiguration plan in September 2014. The capital fund and repair reserve will pay for bathroom renovations and expenses related to the reconfiguration that will result in the creation of a PK-6 at the current middle school and a 7-12 Jr./Sr. High School.
Great things are happening in your schools! Great teachers and caring adults are supporting the learning and skill development that our students need. Great parents, guardians and community volunteers are becoming actively engaged in our schools. Our parent group, boosters, and members for each of the district’s bargaining units have collaborated to improve district communication, district programs, and athletic fields.
We appreciate greatly the interest that you take in the education of our community’s children. Please remember to vote on May 21st between Noon and 8 PM at the Stuart M. Townsend Middle School located on Hyland Drive in Lake Luzerne.
