MATH ACHIEVEMENT

Mrs. Kathleen McGinnis and Mrs. Heather Davis present a math estimation activity every month for the Pre- K-2 students.  The October winners were:

Pre K: Daniel Deuel, K: Nadalie Mason, 1st Grade: Austin Lathers and 2nd Grade: Gavin Peters

The November winners were:

Pre K: Isabelle Cook, Kindergarten: Gabrielle Graham

1st Grade:  Christian Tyler and 2nd Grade:  Emily Gale

 

SHARING IS CARING

The Sharing is Caring Program is underway again in the UPK-2 wing.   It is our 8th year! New toys are being accepted until December 14th.  The committee consists of Mrs. Heather Davis, Mrs. Julia Bradley, Mrs. Audrey Elliott, and Mrs. Kathleen McGinnis. THERAPY DOGS AT HADLEY-LUZERNE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Reading with therapy dogs visit Mrs. Winnek and Mrs. Cook’s first grade class every Thursday afternoon for 45 minutes to provide a relaxed setting for students to practice reading and gain self-confidence.  The dogs present a non-threatening atmosphere which has been researched to show improvement in student’s reading abilities and skills.

The student reads a book aloud to a dog for 10 minutes at their own reading level.  While they are reading, other students work on reading with adult volunteers, listening skills on the computer, and study spelling and sight words.

VISITS

HL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Amanda Schaffer, author, and Matt Ostrom, illustrator of “Dog Gone Confused” will visit the K-2 building on December 9th to share their love and knowledge of writing, reading, and illustrating and show how they develop and create stories and illustrations

 

NHS BLOOD DRIVE

The Hadley-Luzerne High School National Honor Society is working with the American Red Cross to sponsor a Blood Drive on Friday, December 16, 2011.  The drive will be held in the George Doherty Gymnasium at the High School from 8:15 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. on December 16.  Please contact Mr. Scanlan in the High School Guidance Office at 696-2112 Ext 115 to schedule an appointment.  Walk-ins will be accommodated as permitted by the schedule.  PLEASE GIVE BLOOD.  WE NEED YOU!

 

PK-2 MEMORY BOOK

For the first time ever! The HL Yearbook Club will be selling H-L MEMORY BOOKS!  Memory Books will feature HLCS students in Grades Pre-K – 2.  Portraits, Activities, Events, and Every Day Life of our PK-2 Students. What a great Memory Keeper!  Memory Books cost only $20.00 including tax and can be purchased in the H-L Yearbook room at the high school or in the elementary office. For more info please call 696-2112 X 116.  Elementary students will not be in our regular yearbook. They will be proudly displayed in the Memory Book only.

 

SAGA CITY

The Saga City students are selling raffle tickets for a chance to win one of nine fantastic baskets.  The cost is only a dollar a ticket.  If you have not been asked by a student to make a donation for a chance to win, but are interested in doing so, please stop by the high school office.  The drawing will be held on December 20th.  These theme baskets make a wonderful gift and all proceeds help support our students leaving for Saga City on June 25th, 2012.  For more information call 696-2112 x105.

You can now purchase your 2012 yearbook on-line at HLCS.org or in any school building main office!

 

YOUTH BASKETBALL

The District will be offering Saturday Youth Basketball under the direction of Mr. David Diamond.  Basketball skills will be taught at the Stuart M. Townsend Middle School in the small and large gym.  Grades 2-3 start at 8 am sharp and end at 9:00 am each Saturday starting December 17th through February 18th.  Practice for Grades 4-6 starts at 9:15 am and ends at 10:15 am.
