RIVER
WATCH UPDATE
Spring
2005
Last September and October, the River Watch students collected their samples at
the 4 sites, Hudson
and Sacandaga River gauging stations, Rod Johnson’s front
yard (confluence), and Erica Cartier’s home (downstream). They brought
them back to the lab to analyze for chemical content. We are now growing our own culture of
coliform and E. coli, thanks to a grant Mrs. LaBombard received last spring
from the NY State Water Federation. The results were presented in a
poster display at the annual consortium at the Darrow
School in New Lebanon, NY last December. Also, Hadley Luzerne entered a
team in the “mock stream analysis” part of the program. Our
students analyzed an unknown sample of water for nitrates, phosphates,
dissolved oxygen, alkalinity, and chloride ions. The winner was the team
that comes closest to the actual values which were determined by the River
Watch coordinator. Hadley Luzerne took 1st
place in the poster contest, identifying macro-invertebrates segment, and the
mock stream analysis. We also came in 3rd
in the power point presentation. This spring’s collection dates will be
the 2nd week in May. The
students will begin preparing for the competition next October.
Students participating are seniors AJ Brooks, Kaitlin Sicke, Jesse Keenan, and
Ted Dalaba.
Juniors are Dennis Beatty, Chris Love, Merril
Kline, Renee Rudolph, and Justin Rosenbrock, Amy
Santell. Some of the Sophomores include Curtis Jones,
Brittany Aston.
