ELA
in
Third
Grade
Third grade continues to use the same
series the students have been learning from since kindergarten. The MacMillan McGraw- Hill provides reading
of quality children’s literature. Some
favorites of past third grade classes include Lon Po Po,
Two Bad Ants and Cloudy with a Chance Of Meatballs.
Research shows that children learn to
read by reading. The more they read and
discuss what they have read the better readers they will become. Comprehension skills move from the literal
level to inferential in nature. The students will be asked to do more complex
skills such as drawing conclusion and making broad generalizations.
The children will take part in many
reading activities throughout the day.
The components of the program include large group, small group and
individual reading conferences.
The year is divided into six units. Following every unit a Unit Test is
administered. These unit tests are
formatted similar to the NY State Third Grade ELA Assessments given in January.
