STUDENTS ESCAPE TO A WINTER WONDERLAND IN QUÉBEC CITY

You might say that the recent High School French class overnight trip up North brought them “right to the dogs” and you would be telling the truth!! A group of 20 students, chaperones and other adults ventured to enjoy the wonders of winter in beautiful Québec City. They wanted to experience what Condé Nast Travel Magazine has voted the number two travel destination in the Americas. When the students were asked to name the two best activities on the trip, they all mentioned the dog sledding, where they were quickly trained to drive their own sled of huskies on to a 5 km trail in the woods. Awesome!! They also mentioned visiting the Ice Hotel, called L’hôtel de Glace, only one of two such hotels in the world. The magnificent ice structure has over 36 rooms, including a disco and a charming wedding chapel. The students also reenacted the military battles fought on the Plains of Abraham in a fun activity where they learned about the historical importance of Québec City and its ties to the United States. They also visited the frozen falls of Montmorency, which are higher than Niagara Falls. The visit to the Village de Sport was another highlight of the trip because the students rode water rafts and toboggans in a winter sports theme park adventure spot. The walking tour of the old city on the first day was memorable as students realized the incredible influence from France on the culture, architecture and language. This amazing field-trip was a “trip of a lifetime” for all making many great memories. Slides from the trip can be viewed at the website of our French teacher, Madame Maryann Seeley at www.hlcs.org , by clicking High School, Foreign Language.

HS FRENCH CLASSES CREATE ORIGINAL 2012 CALENDARS

The French level 3 and level 4 (university) classes created inspiring calendars for 2012. The students in both classes took French sayings from celebrated French authors and designed a page to depict the quote. The French 3 class drew their own illustrations and were inspired by the writings of Antoine de St. Exupery who wrote the classic novel, Le Petit Prince (the Little Prince.) The most famous quote from this novel says “the most important things of life are invisible to the eye and can only be known to the heart.” The French 4 classes studied famous quotes from a random selection of authors, including La Rochefoucauld and La Fontaine. The calendar opens with the quote that says “each of us has our own illusion of the world”, with an incredible graphic of the world. There were also some personal photos, including a picture from our recent trip to New York City. The entire production of the calendar was completed by Mrs. Seeley’s daughter, Vanessa Seeley, who enjoyed helping the classes create an epic project. Check out the website for the entire production from each class. Happy New Year and Bonne Année!!

READ TO SUCCEED

The K-2 students are participating in the Six Flags Read to Succeed program for the month of January. Students are taking time to read for fun during the month. When they have completed six hours of reading for fun, they complete and return their tracking form to their classroom teacher. Each student who completes the six hours of reading will receive a ticket for one free day’s visit to the Six Flags Great Escape to use during the summer. We are hoping to have a large number of students complete this activity. The deadline for turning in completed forms is January 31, 2012.

PAJAMA PANTS DAY FUNDRAISER

December 22nd was Pajama Pants Day at the Stuart M. Townsend Middle School. Thank you to everyone who donated 50 cents to wear PJ pants to school. The MS Student Council was able to raise $112.50 that will be given to our local food pantry. The food pantry needs extra help this time of year to restock after the Christmas holiday. Thank you to the students for following the rules, and to Mr. Cronin for saying yes!

HADLEY LUZERNE STUDENTS PREPARE FOR SAGA CITY TRIP TO JAPAN

As part of the Warren County-Saga City sister cities school initiative, 15 Hadley Luzerne students and 2 teachers continue to prepare for their life changing trip to Japan. This trip will be the third trip for their school district. Every eight years, 10 middle school and 10 high school students are selected from Hadley-Luzerne for this distinct honor. Unfortunately, the students were supposed to travel in June and July of 2011, but due to the earthquake and tsunami, the trip was delayed for one year. These students have been team building and fundraising since September 2010. They started Japanese language and culture training in January 2011 with Mrs. Milly Koh, the program coordinator. The training classes were postponed in April due to the trip delay. They restart their training this month with much anticipation. Hadley-Luzerne hosted a Saga City student exchange program in March of 2010. Many of the students selected for the upcoming trip have kept up friendships with their guest. The trip delay has only created even more excitement and anticipation. Being an international student ambassador for Hadley-Luzerne Central School, Lake Luzerne, and Warren County is an indescribable honor. Previous students that have participated in the trip cannot say enough about the experience and opportunity to live with Japanese families and attend school with their hosts.

The trip is expensive. Students are expected to pay roughly $2300 plus expenses. To help offset the cost, they have held monthly fundraising programs. The public is invited to the next two events.

On Monday, February 27th, the Billy Martin Circus will perform in the Hadley Luzerne High School gym at 7:00 pm. Advanced tickets are only $7 per adult. Tickets at the door are $12 per adult. Two children (12 and under) are free with an adult accompanying them.

On Wednesday, March 14th, The Brooks’ House of Bar-B-Q meal will be served from 3:30-6:30 pm in the Hadley Luzerne High School cafeteria. The cost for a BBQ chicken meal is only $10 for adults and $8 for children. For more information about either event, please contact Karen Love at 494-5919.

If you would like to make a donation to support this trip, please send monetary or gift donations to the attention of Karen Love or Michelle Stearns (Saga City Advisors), HLCS, PO Box 200, 273 Lake Avenue, Lake Luzerne, NY 12846. Also, be sure to make any checks out to the H-L Saga City. If you have any questions, please call 696-2112 ext 105. Thank you in advance for your help and support.

On November 18th, a group of high school students took a trip to New York City. The purpose of the trip was to present students with a glimpse of life during the Middle Ages and to explore the site of the 9/11 Memorial. The trip was organized by our French teacher, Maryann Seeley and High School Social Studies teacher, Marc Morrison. Robert Duffy chaperoned and led the tour through lower Manhattan. Before arriving in the city, they had lunch at the Medieval Times Dinner & Tournament Restaurant, where they delighted in a real medieval meal and tournament event, complete with jousting. This was followed by a ride on the Statue Cruises where they saw the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. Upon arriving in Manhattan, Mr. Duffy did an extensive tour of the historical sites of the Wall Street area. The trip culminated in a visit to the World Trade Center complex where they received a behind-the-scenes view of the reconstruction of the World Trade Towers and the 9/11 memorial. The tour was organized by one of the project managers of the site, Melissa Bryon Harding, who is also a graduate of Hadley-Luzerne High School, class of 1996. She was delighted to provide this insiders’ view of the project and meet with some of her former teachers and community members.
